Historique :	Ce tableau provient de l'Hôtel-Dieu de Boiscommun (compte-rendu d'une visite de 1855) : Nous visitâmes l'hospice ou l'Hôtel-Dieu de Boiscommun. Dans la modeste chapelle de cet établissement se trouve un tableau peint sur toile, représentant le martyre de saint Etienne qui renferme de fort belles parties. Le saint surtout a une suavité qui rappelle les physionomies des Chartreux de Le Sueur. (Etat dressé par M. L'abbé Pelletier, vicaire général d'Orléans, membre de la Société, le 15 février 1855). Pour Pierre Rosenberg, ce tableau dérive de la composition d'un tableau d'Annibal Carrache, conservé au musée du Louvre. Provenant de la collection de Louis XIV, cette oeuvre, peinte sur cuivre, a été très célèbre au 17e siècle et a été reproduite à deux reprises dans des gravures exécutées en France à cette époque. Il est possible que l'auteur du tableau, qui constitue une intéressante déviation plutôt qu'une copie littérale de l'oeuvre aujourd'hui au Louvre, ait eu connaissance de la composition de Carrache par l'intermédiaire de Guillaume Chasteau, gravée dans le même sens que le tableau original.
